Mockingbirds are a group of New World passerine birds from the Mimidae family. They are best known for the habit of some species mimicking the songs of other birds and the sounds of insects and amphibians,[1] often loudly and in rapid succession. There are about 17 species in three genera.
The Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) is the only mockingbird commonly found in North America. This bird is mainly a permanent resident, but northern birds may move south during harsh weather. Growing up, I was surrounded, on both sides of my family, by artists of all genres. Graphic artists, painters, in oil and acrylic, photographers, musicians, quilters, sculptors. This instilled an interest and excitement for art that I was only able to pursue from time to time throughout my life. Now, recently retired, I have rediscovered that enthusiasm and have time to pursue what I love through the mediums of watercolor, alcohol ink, charcoal and photography. While I have had no formal training, I have learned a great deal from a wonderful artist and teacher at our local community college whose encouragement and love of all art has given me wings and for that I am eternally grateful.
