Description
Vintage Dragonware Tea set with Japanese fan which has calligraphy printed on it. The pot along with the cup and saucer are part of a larger set dating from the 1940's and belonged to my Grandmother.
Tea ceremony and calligraphy:
Calligraphy, mainly in the form of hanging scrolls, plays a central role in tea ceremony. Scrolls, often written by famous calligraphers or Buddhist monks, are hung in the tokonoma (scroll alcove) of the tea room. They are selected for their appropriateness for the occasion, including the season and the theme of the particular get-together. Calligraphic scrolls may feature well-known sayings, particularly those associated with Buddhism, poems, descriptions of famous places, or words or phrases associated with tea ceremony.
Dragonware tea sets were produced in Japan from the end of the 1800s.
They were decorated using Moriage, a style of porcelain decoration that lays beads of porcelain on the item prior to kiln firing, and then painting these later. This creates a raised motif on the item, in this case, a dragon.

Congratulations on your wonderful still life image earning a feature in Women Photographers! It is also a Photo of the Day featured at the top of the home page, for 7/14/2019. I had a tea cup exactly like that as a child. I'm not sure what happened to it! This brought a smile to my face.

Nice image, Marcia. I have a decent-sized collection of dragonware. My grandmother got me interested in it when she gave me hers.
Marcia Breznay replied:
Thank you, Debi. I too have a large collection, the interest was sparked by this set handed down by my grandmother :)
